Family for the Glory of God - Part 1

Andrew unpacks what the bible says about family, living for the honour of God. Deut 6:1-6. Eph 6:1-4 Eph 6 describes an asymmetry in relationship, children to obey parents. Assumption being that the child is 'in the Lord'. Fathers - don't exasperate your children, why fathers ? because he is most likely to create the problem (physically stronger and lower emotional intelligence). Punish for wilful disobedience rather than childishness. We can punish based on inconvenience to us, rather than inappropriate behaviour. Eph 6:4 goes on to say 'instead ... Bring them up in the training and discipline of The Lord. This suggests that The Lord is more important than even family.
Romans 6:1-14

Romans 6 answers the question, if we are saved by grace, do we really need to change at all? Christianity is all about change. The early chapters of Romans highlight the big issues of life, such as God's judgement of sin. Romans describes Two Realms * Adam - Sin, Death, Law, Condemnation, Old * Jesus/God - Life, Freedom, Righteousness, New Moving from Adam's realm to God's realm isn't possible by works, but by faith (Rom 5:1) Baptism is being incorporated into something, or identified with. Faith unites us with Christ and baptises us as a Christian. Died to Adam's realm in order that we can live a new life in God's realm. Free from being a slave to sin, and given power to live in God's realm. Grow and develop a discontent with the old self, whilst grow in contentment of the new life Discipline yourself to not let sin reign
Judges 13-16

Andrew unpacks the Judge Samson. Despite Gods continued mercy and love, Israel again did evil in the sight of The Lord. The Philistine oppression was more subtle, and This time Israel doesn't cry out for The Lord. Samson's parents were God fearing and he was dedicated as a Nazirite. In chapter 14. Samson ignored the requirements of the vow. His riddle was an arrogant provocation. Samson had a problem with his eyes, & discipline - which undermines his actions. Samson was physically strong but of weak character. God used this broken man. He used Samson to stir up the Philistines to oppress Israel, to stir up Israel to cry out for The Lord. God is the deliverer !
