Discernment in the Son
1 John 2:18-29 | EV Night | 1/12/2024 | Andrew Hayes
Nothing says apocalyptic cult like talk of the end times and the antichrist. But a closer look at what the Bible really says (rather than Hollywood) shows that the key danger in the end times is spiritual rather than physical. We see in 1 John 2:18-28 that the great danger is that we'll miss the truth of Jesus. But we also see the defences that God kindly provides to keep us in the truth.
Religious rituals don't save. Faith in Jesus does.
Colossians 2:16-23 | EV Night | 6/10/2024 | Andrew Hayes
Everyone wants to grow - or we should! But how? Colossians 2:16-23 raises the dangers of seeking growth through human traditions, rules, or mystical practices, which sound helpful but can actually be harmful. In Colossians, Paul shows us that Jesus gives us all we need for salvation and growth, and we see how it is that he grows us. Are you giving yourself to the normal ways that Jesus grows you?

Real Faith
James 2:14-26 | EV Church | 21/04/2024 | Andrew Hayes
James 2 can be a confronting, and even confusing passage. It talks about how to be saved, and it seems to say something different to what we see in John, or Paul. Is salvation by faith, or do we also need to add good works? We see that James and Paul do not contradict each other, but rather they fight against different errors. The truth is we are saved by faith, not what we do. Yet real faith shows itself in what we do. A challenge to consider if our faith is real.
