Family for the Glory of God - Part 1
Ephesians 6:1-4 | EV Church | 26/05/2013 | Andrew Heard
Andrew unpacks what the bible says about family, living for the honour of God. Deut 6:1-6. Eph 6:1-4 Eph 6 describes an asymmetry in relationship, children to obey parents. Assumption being that the child is 'in the Lord'. Fathers - don't exasperate your children, why fathers ? because he is most likely to create the problem (physically stronger and lower emotional intelligence). Punish for wilful disobedience rather than childishness. We can punish based on inconvenience to us, rather than inappropriate behaviour. Eph 6:4 goes on to say 'instead ... Bring them up in the training and discipline of The Lord. This suggests that The Lord is more important than even family.
Has Jesus caused oppression or freedom?
Romans 8:14-17 | EV Church | 29/01/2023 | Dave Jensen
We live in a society that defines freedom as personal liberty - free to be me! Dave Jensen speaks on the true freedom Jesus brings, not 'no-rules' but free from the oppression of sin.
Romans 7:1-6
Romans 7:1-6 | EV Church | 4/08/2013 | Andrew Heard
Much of Romans is meant to correct misunderstandings. Andrew unpacks the first 6 verses of Romans 7 in light of several misunderstandings. 1. Everything one day will be okay. 2. If God is holy and angry at sin, give me the laws to live by. 3. We misunderstand marriage. Being bound by marriage is different to being romantically connected. 4. Christians live under guilt. (wrong - we are counted as righteous). 5. If I'm saved by what Christ has done, I can do what I like. 6. To be in the spirit means you don't need the written word. 7. Christians are no different to anyone else. 8. Christianity is like every others religion Pray that you will rejoice that we are free from the law, and free to grow in holiness for Christ our rescuer.
Death is the End?
1 Corinthians 15:1-11 | EV Church | 20/01/2013 | Andrew Heard
Death is the end or something happens after this life are mutually exclusive. i.e only one of these statements can be right. The essence of who Jesus was, is bound up on the afterlife. John 11:21-26 Jesus primary purpose wasn't to be a moral teacher, but to be a ransom for many so that they live free in the afterlife for eternity. Mark 10:45 Believing that this life is all there is, leads to a thinking that one should pursue whatever provides the most pleasure, and one that has no morals and no justice. Perhaps we would rather live in the despair of nothing, than to acknowledge God and live under His service. Facing God on judgement day without Jesus' protection, is a fate worse than death. If there is life beyond (as claimed by Jesus), it has very serious ramifications.
Judges 19-21
Judges 19:1-2125 | EV Church | 7/07/2013 | Andrew Hayes
Andrew Hayes unpacks the last 3 chapters of Judges. In those days Israel had no king, and everyone did as they saw fit. These chapters demonstrate the depravity of humanity proving that we are not basically good people. Judges starts with the death of Joshua, and Israel's disobedience in failing to conquer their promised land and ends with Israel in civil war against Benjamin, in desparate need of a king! When you are a slave to evil forces the arrival of a king is such good news. Jesus is the King that unlike human leaders provides salvation, rescuing us from sin.
Judges 2:6-19
Judges 2:6-19 | EV Church | 5/05/2013 | Tim Baldwin
Tim Baldwin provides an introduction to Judges. God's people finally get to inhabit the promised land, to fulfil the promises made to Abraham. And what should have been a great experience for God's chosen people, becomes a series of generations who reject God, are rescued by a Judge, then fall away into worse behaviour. As God calls his people to drive out the other nations - it's worth considering if Holy war is ever ok? 1. It was punishment for their wickedness (see Gen 15) 2. God owns all land and was fulfilling His promise (Deut 7:7) 3. To maintain the covenant relationship (Deut 7:6) What about now this side of Jesus? No - it's not ok to use these verses to justify war, we are in Exodus preparing for the new Kingdom Yes - spiritually we are at war, and need to rage Holy war on sin.
